Measurement in yards

The documentation says that the measurement should be in meters. Whilst this is fine as the default, we should also be fine with yards as an explicit specification when the hole is measured and signed as such. Also see Community Discussion topic. Casey boy (talk) 09:23, 12 June 2026 (UTC)

Status of this tag

@HuggeK - you've set the status of this key to deprecated but the proposal you link to was rejected and, whilst there may be legitimate issues with this tag, discussions there (with just two or three people) are not sufficient to deprecate this tag. Seeing as this tag is combined with golf=* 2437 times whilst distance=* is combined with golf=* 1706 times, currently this is the preferred way of mapping. I also note dist:=* was mentioned on the de facto golf proposal which pre-dates your rejected and draft proposals. Further, there are issues with using distance=* since your intended usage clearly doesn't match the de factor wiki description of that key (route relations and milestone nodes) so there would need to be a re-writing of that key too. You will need to do more community engagement to deprecate this tag. So, as it currently stands, whilst it may be a good idea to deprecate, I don't think you've met that threshold yet and so your change should be reverted. The proposal was rejected partly becuase people thought the dist tag was not good and the distance tag is better, and I also agree on that. We argued expensively that we should not touch the existing tagging, but that user didn´t want to listen to us on that regard so we need to deprecate this in favour of the distance tag.

But that proposal you linked to - thats not voted on, no?

I can see two people discussing this issue (you being one of them) and then one person referencing in their no vote. I had a look on the Community Forum topic too but didn't see any discussion (maybe I missed it?). That's not enough to deprecate an in use tag.

You're right the historical proposal wasn't voted on, but it is a de facto, long standing proposal that is the foundation for the current status quo. So to overturn that you need to meet a higher threshold.

Like I said, you might be right, and dist=* should be deprecated but you need to get consensus on that. Start a community forum discussion on this specific topic and perhaps follow up with a proposal (if needed). Casey boy (talk) 08:40, 17 September 2026 (UTC)
