Relations as layers

From what I've read and experienced, the osm api code does not cope well with massive relations, that is editing them can have a significant impact on the whole server processing the updates, because it needs to check each member is a valid object. Tags on nodes and ways should be, if not enough, the only encouraged way to classify things as belonging to a certain layer. Alv (talk) 16:38, 15 April 2013 (UTC)

- I tried to clean up the description a little in the main text since it may have been unclear. It is not intended that a single relation capture an entire layer. A layer is the collection of objects with a given map_layer tag. The collection can be composed of nodes, ways and relations. Sutter (talk) 10:42, 18 April 2013 (UTC)
