Hi, I read your message on IRC #osm.

Nice table, but doesn't this belong in the United Kingdom railways page somewhere? PeterIto 19:18, 16 August 2009 (UTC)

Core or separate dataset?

Is the idea of this proposal simply sufficiently detailed tagging on the core OSM dataset to enable rendering of a Rail map (as in the Cycle Map), or would people be interested in keeping a parallel set of data with the location of every past, present and future railway?

The problem with abandoned railways (in the UK at least) is that the trackbed gets reused, built over or otherwise obliterated -- and the same can apply to railway buildings. I'd like to record any railway, past or present, but since this would involve mapping things that aren't there any more, I don't think it's right to do it in the main database.

Opinions?

I believe the current objective of OpenStreetMap is to map all the existing world's railway network, together with information about abandoned railways where there is still evidence of the route or features. Where the route has been turned back to open fields then the features should not be mapped. If it is now a road or track the it can be tagged as railway=abandoned railway. Merge

If I understand this correctly, this is the top page of a worldwide effort to map the planet's railway networks. If that is the intention then should it not remain linked to but separate from the 'railways' article. I say that because there could be a large number of railway mapping projects. Possibly the page should be renamed as 'wikiproject Railway' or 'List of railway projects' to make its purpose more clear. Do we also need a category for 'railway project'. I suggest that the list should be at a national level and if there are regional or city bases projects then these should be accessed via the country. PeterIto 16:53, 16 August 2009 (UTC)

To follow up from the previous comment I do agree that we should merge the tagging advice from this page into the railways article. This ShakespeareFan00 user page should possibly also be merged into the railways article. PeterIto 16:58, 16 August 2009 (UTC)
I have now moved all the tagging content to the railways article. This page is now a list of project around the world. The list is not sorted and may not be up-to-date, but that is another bit of work for someone to do. PeterIto 19:33, 16 August 2009 (UTC)
