Why use a relation for this?

After reading the article and all linked information, my impression is that, when needed, the most simple solution is to tag a node with "vehicle:backward=no" (assuming that the allowed direction is forward) directly on the way next to the sign. This is similar to tagging other access-related traffic signs as a node and does not look like a hack to me. What would be the benefit of using a relation (or several relations)?
