This is a proposal how to improve the tagging of trees (natural=tree) for the use in 3D-applications. This proposal is a part of OSM-4D definition.

Authors: Kinga Nowak-Dyjeta, Marek Strassenburg Kleciak

Notes

Document in work. Comments and suggestions are welcome ! Please help to fill the table below

This site should be used for the assignment of defined low polygon 3D geometry types for the tree species.

The purpose of this assignment is 3D visualization of trees in OpenStreetMap. Each tree with name can be represented as a 3d model.

It is often possible that real existing 3D geometry does not corresponds to the theoretical model. In this case please use individual tagging fot tree shape. Individual shape value has priority over the general (theoretical) tagging.

Tagging

3D Generalization

Parameters:

  1. natural=*:tree
  2. species= (here species name in at least one language from the table below)
  3. height=*: (meter)
  4. diameter_crown: (meter)
  5. height_trunk: (height tree trunk in meter)
  6. circumference=*: for the circumference of the trunk, measured in a height of 1.3 (meter) above ground (This corresponds to the international scientific tree classification). Diameter tree trunk in meter
  7. crown_type: Kind of typical crown geometry. Values: A, B, C, D... - see table: Types of crown geometry. The tagging of tree crown with species untypical geometry is possible!
  8. Estimated_age: (Estimated tree age by use of start_date=* as a "birth" date of the tree)
  9. trunk_inclination: ( tree trunk deviation from the middle axis in degrees)
  10. trunk_rotation: (rotation of tree trunk deviation in degrees measured clockwise from north)Treeparametersdescription3.jpg
  11. Health: (see table Health status below)

Estimated age

Estimated age of tree Age values often estimated:
Years old 1-10, 10-50, 50-100, 100-200, over 200

if known, of course, exactly age by use of start_date=* tag

growth curve

the cumulative growth curve [1], describes the growth of the tree and can be added as a parameter to the tree for better time based 3D vizualisation.

Health status

Tegging:

health=<value>

e.g.: health=0 means, tree is dead.

Health of tree, values Description
0 dead
1 seriously ill
2 ill
3 slightly ill
4 generally fit
5 fit

FAQ

Q: Why so many names in various languages on this page?

A: The viewer that is being developed for this purpose should automatized identify the tree species for 3d reprezentation, regardless of botanic knowdledge of the user... It should be enough for example, that someone writes name_de:Weide and not Salix repens subsp. rosmarinifolia. For this purpose use the Viewer informations from the tables below.
