Information About the Project

What is the problem that you are working to address in your community?

Muleba District has a population of about 500,000 people, and majority of them live in very remote 120 islands of lake Victoria. There is a wide geographical barriers between the people of mainland and the lake Victoria islands. There is acutely shortage of internate in almost all 120 Islands of lake Victoria.

In addition, the area is surrounded by tropical forest, lack of modern roads. Hence it faces a lot of tribal land conflicts and poor development planning at Village, Ward and District level. Further more, there is low social economic opportunities of investment, leading to poverty in the community particularly to Youths and Women

What motivates you to work on this issue?

Muleba district Council has an official website of which is missing many data, especially the geographical areas. TDT has attracted the community through training conducted to 20 organizations including UWASHEMU, where by 15 paralegals have adopted knowledge on OSM and this has helped them to meet new beneficiaries and use data for improvement.

Our 15 Paralegals attended OSM data training for one day from TDT.

20 new locations within lake Victoria islands have been aded on a geo map.

About 397 people have been reached by our Paralegals using the OSM data by 2020-2021.

Challenges:

Lack of skills as regards to OSM,

Lack of facilities like smartphones, projectors and computors

Lack of internet facilities.

Our response:

We used local government leaders especially Village leaders to help to identify new places and we managed to provide 3 smartphones to our Volunteers (Paralegals). We increased the number of Paralegals from Islands of lake Victoria from 5 to 15 Paralegals.

Describe your sustainability plan

To link the program with LGAs particularly the Village and District council. Established Youth map clubs, involve Primary school pupils and their teachers in future of the project.

We will purchase 1 laptop, 1 projector and 5 smartphones.

Train 5 mapathons/TOTS.

Train 200 secondary school students from 10 schools.

Establish 2 Youth clubs.

What are your project long-term goals?

Extend training from 5 to 10 TOTS.

Extend training from 200 - 500 secondary students.

Extend Youth clubs from 2 to 5.

Train 20 LGAs staffs

1 projector, 5 smartphones, WiFi facility and 1 laptop , one hired hall (because they will facilitate training of both mapathons and students and access to the internet.)

We shall establish WhatsApp groups as well as Facebook groups.

Our main focus is Youths and Cildrens from secondary schools, where by young boys and girls haveen equally involved.

By training secondary students from 200 to 500, these trained students will adopt their gained knowledge and skills to other Youths in the District.
