Background

Thailand and its small OpenStreetMap community have struggled for years dealing with remote companies/organizations low quality mass modifications.

Recurring Common issues

  • use of hundreds of careless temporary paid workers
  • inconsistency across remote mappers
  • lack of quality control
  • overwhelming mass additions/modifications
  • lack of local knowledge about the features of the Thailand road network and landscapes (farm huts are not residential houses!)
  • conflicting own guidelines and highway classification methodology
  • changing classifications from local mappers
  • watching changes in areas and reverting them to fits their agenda
  • remote mappers not responding to changesets comments
  • exaggerating curves including at visible sharp intersections
  • low-quality road additions zigzagging thru visible intersections
  • adding residential roads everywhere in rural/farming/agricultural areas
  • empty promises things will be improved over the years
  • providing no tangible solutions and guarantees that concrete actions have been taken and problems will be improved/solved

Consequences

  • most of the issues and efforts within the community relate to corporate vandalism, and so the community has lost focus and enthusiasm to work together as a community.
  • the local community spends considerable time fixing the issues above, and they only represent the tip of an iceberg.
  • the small community does not have resources to design stricter rules and monitor them and is tired and frustrated
  • mappers have left OSM (most likely many) and some even blamed the admins and community for the lack of actions taken to prevent corporate vandalism.

Vote

On April 8th 2022, a vote has taken place among the local community to decide whether mappers would:

  • (A) volunteer to design stricter rules and monitor them
  • (B) agree on a full ban of remote organizations/companies doing mass-modifications
  • (C) prefer to not change anything
