About me

Hello, I am GlavkomLVO. I primarily contribute to OpenStreetMap by mapping and refining electric power infrastructure, especially high-voltage and ultra-high-voltage transmission networks.

My main interests include:

  • High-voltage transmission lines and their topology
  • Transmission substations and switching stations
  • Power plant step-up substations
  • HVDC converter stations
  • Transmission towers and poles
  • Line circuits and route relations
  • Substation connections, busbar layouts and outgoing bays
  • Correct voltage, frequency, circuit and operator tagging
  • Historical and current names of power infrastructure

I am particularly interested in large interconnected transmission systems, including 220 kV, 330 kV, 500 kV, 750 kV and 1000 kV AC networks, as well as HVDC systems.

A significant part of my mapping work concerns the Chinese transmission grid, especially the 750 kV networks of Northwest China and UHV infrastructure.

Mapping approach

I generally use a combination of:

  • Aerial and satellite imagery
  • Official environmental impact assessment documents
  • Project approval and construction documents
  • Grid planning documents
  • Publicly available technical diagrams and maps
  • Photographs and other verifiable open sources

When reliable information becomes available, I may revise existing line geometry, substation connections, circuit relations, names and other technical details.

For transmission lines, I try to represent the actual electrical topology rather than simply drawing visually continuous corridors.

I also distinguish, where possible, between:

  • transmission substations;
  • switching stations;
  • power plant step-up substations;
  • HVDC converter stations;
  • individual AC and DC switchyards.

Current interests

Some areas I frequently work on include:

  • Northwest China 750 kV transmission network
  • Xinjiang power grid
  • Gansu Hexi Corridor
  • Qinghai transmission network
  • Ningxia and Shaanxi transmission systems
  • UHVAC and UHVDC infrastructure
  • Power infrastructure rendering and visualization in OpenInfraMap

Contact

If you notice an error in one of my edits, have better technical documentation, or want to discuss power-grid mapping, feel free to leave a message on my talk page.

Corrections supported by reliable sources are always welcome.

Power networks are complicated. The map should not make them more complicated than they already are. 🐧
