Hi,

I am a regular contributor to OSM mainly in the French Pyrenees near where I live.

I was born near Chambéry in the French Alps before moving to the Pyrenees.

I mainly use OSM for hiking and trail running activities.

For a long time I have been looking for the perfect hiking map based on OSM data.

I have found brilliant ideas and features in some of the existing ones but unfortunately not all of them are gathered on the same map.

Since constantly switching between several maps is not really practical, I have been thinking and reading about creating my own tile server but I am well aware of the huge time investment required to serve a good quality map with a decent coverage, especially if the map starts becoming popular.

Therefore I decided to spend some time comparing in details the most promising existing maps and highlighting for each of them the strengths and weaknesses according to a set of standards established with a group of hiker friends. By doing so I hope to encourage the authors (which I thank and admire for the tremendous work accomplished so far) to further improve some features and offer to all hiking enthusiasts a set of maps with their own design but with all key features that make a good hiking map.

My main contribution on this wiki so far is this page: Hiking Maps

If some of the authors are willing to improve some map features but have no time for it, I would be more than happy to give a hand for any specific task.
