About Me

Hello, I’m Wankmann.

I have been contributing to OpenStreetMap since 2009.

My main mapping area is Schnaittachtal, Bavaria, Germany, including:

  • Gemeinde Neunkirchen am Sand
  • Markt Schnaittach
  • Gemeinde Simmelsdorf

I was an active marathon runner for many years and know the region very well due to extensive training runs several times per week. I frequently combine running and mapping.

Mapping Focus

My main areas of interest are:

  • Hiking routes and route relations
  • Local completeness and data quality
  • Fire department–related mapping
  • Fire hydrants using OpenStreetMap data only

By September 2010, the hiking routes in Neunkirchen am Sand, Schnaittach, and Simmelsdorf were largely completed.

As of 2026, the region is estimated to be about 99.5% mapped, with ongoing maintenance and updates.

Fire Hydrants and OpenFireMap

  • Created a complete fire hydrant map for the local fire department in Rollhofen, based entirely on OSM data
  • Discovered OpenFireMap in November 2010
  • Completed OpenFireMap coverage for my home village within three days
  • Owner of the domain openfiremap.org
  • Ongoing contributor to improving OpenFireMap and promoting hydrant mapping
  • Development of OpenFireMap.org v2

  • Created Hydranten-Jäger, a smartphone app for simplified fire hydrant mapping.

Buildings

  • Added nearly all buildings in my home town
  • Mapping effort took approximately four weeks
  • Estimated accuracy around 97%
  • Errors can be corrected directly by other mappers

Licensing and Data Quality

  • Performed ODbL cleanup for the Schnaittachtal region
  • Checked hiking route relations for ODbL compliance
  • Used OSM Inspector to verify license-safe data

Tools and Devices

Experience with the following GPS devices:

  • Garmin Oregon 550
  • Garmin Forerunner 55
