YouthMappers at SUST, a student organization at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) and a YouthMappers chapter of the YouthMappers network.

Our Mission

We are a group of student mappers at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology participating in the humanitarian mapping community. We are interested in building our mapping skills and we implement various mapping activities that support geographic development and disaster response. We hold the YouthMappers motto, "We don't just build maps, we build mappers."

History

The YouthMappers at SUST chapter joined the YouthMappers network in May 2019 with the participation of undergraduate and graduate students, as well as professors from the Department of Geography and Environment at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) in Sylhet, Bangladesh. Together, they share an unwavering enthusiasm for the mission of the YouthMappers community, youth participation, and and joined to contribute as volunteers towards collaboration and humanitarian mapping using OpenStreetMap.

Activities

Task Purpose Details Tools Date
Training on OpenStreetMap Introductory session between new EC members and our regional ambassador, Mr. Sawan Shariar. The discussion is about upcoming Youthmappers events and a short introduction and training on OpenStreetMap. Workshop on OpenStreetMap on Campus To learn the mapping with ID editor and a mapathon project Live workshop on OpenStreetMap For Humanitarian and Disaster Response Preparedness session with our Regional Ambassador Mr. Sawan Shariar. A Mapathon project on the HOT Tasking Manager website and OsmAnd application. On University Campus, nearly 50 participants and our advisor teacher were present. Experience Sharing Session To learn about the mapping communities An online experience sharing session on "The State of the Map 2022 & FOSS4G" with our regional ambassador of Youthmappers and voting member of Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team(HOT) S M Sawan Shariar and also Nowshin Binte Jamal Jui, Regional Ambassador, Everywhere She Maps. Through Google Meet, 20 participants were present among our EC members. 31st October, 2022
Club Sponsorship Publicity, Women's Empowerment and Gender Equality, Workshops and Training We have AP-Hub's Student Club Sponsorship until September 2023 3rd November, 2022
Member Recruitment To grow our community YouthMappers at SUST recruited 50 new members December, 2022
Workshop on OSM Editor and KoboToolbox It is led by young leaders from YouthMappers at SUST Covered topics such as YouthMappers, OSM editor and a brief overview of Kobo Toolbox. Participants also engaged in a mapathon project on Tasking Manager. Additionally, played an online-based quiz game called "Kahoot" and rewarded top participants OSM Editor, KoboToolBox, KoboCollect, Tasking Manager 18th March, 2023
