WNAH - OpenGeoTech Team ( WOG2T)

The Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) created the West and North Africa Hub (WNAH) to support communities in the region on various issues. The hub aims to provide communities with the skills and resources to solve their problems through projects, programs, grants, community-initiated campaigns, and other activities.

The hub promotes the use of open source technologies focused on geomatics as well as open source digital mapping. Although more and more public and private organizations are turning to the use of open source geospatial technologies, some are still reluctant for various reasons, including the lack of technical support in case of problems. To address this situation, the organization has decided to build a network of volunteer contributors in order to establish a technical task force to support organizations to use open source technologies for geospatial purposes.

Objectives

The Task Force's objectives are:

  • To provide technical support to organizations that use open source geospatial technologies when problems or difficulties arise.
  • To train users on the best practices and necessary skills to effectively use open source geospatial technologies.
  • To contribute to the improvement and development of open source geospatial technologies by identifying and reporting problems and bugs, proposing solutions, and providing feedback on features to be added.
  • To promote awareness among organizations and users of the benefits and opportunities of using open source geospatial technologies.
  • To encourage collaboration between organizations and communities by sharing knowledge and resources.

Overall, the goal of the Technical Task Force is to make open source geospatial technologies more accessible and easier to use for organizations that want to benefit from them, while fostering the ongoing development and improvement of these technologies.

Why should you join WOG2T?

  • Access to skill development opportunities: Technical task force members have the opportunity to develop and improve their technical skills by working on real-world projects, collaborating with other members, and receiving training and guidance.
  • Experience working with organizations and communities: Members of the Technical Task Force have the opportunity to work with organizations and communities to solve problems related to open source geospatial technologies. This work experience can be valuable in developing teamwork and problem-solving skills.
  • Participation in an active community: The Technical Task Force provides an opportunity to join an active community of people interested in open source geospatial technologies. Members can exchange knowledge and ideas, collaborate on projects, and build lasting professional and personal relationships.
  • Contribution to Humanitarian Causes: The Technical Task Force works with non-profit organizations to solve humanitarian problems, which can give members a sense of personal satisfaction and allow them to contribute to an important cause.
  • Networking and Career Opportunities: Members of the Technical Task Force can benefit from networking opportunities with industry professionals and career development through their work and involvement in open source geospatial technology projects.

Criteria

  • Technical knowledge: Members of the technical task force should have technical expertise in n one or more of the following areas, such as digital mapping, GIS, spatial analysis, data visualization, application development and services( Python,HTML, CSS JS, Jango ...) etc.
  • Practical experience: Members must have practical experience in using open source geospatial technologies to solve real-world problems.
  • Teamwork skills: Members must be able to work effectively in a team and collaborate with other members to achieve project goals.
  • Commitment and Motivation: Members must be committed and motivated to support organizations and communities in using open source geospatial technologies to solve humanitarian problems.
  • Availability: Members must be available to work on projects and activities of the technical task force on a regular and reliable basis. ( 3-5 hours/weeks, depending on project.
  • Good communication: Members must be able to communicate effectively with other members of the technical task force and with the organizations and communities they support.
