(In this section please describe in detail the challenge that your project addresses. We recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words.)

Community generated data has proven to be the most reliable information that reflects the community’s situation and the challenges they face. Working with community members to collect data in their own neighborhood increases data reliability, validity and its ultimate use as the community believes in the data and has a sense of ownership.

Zanzibar Climate Change Alliance expecting to conduct community data (mapping) for improved the disaster and Risk Management related to Floods at `West District –Zanzibar where by four prone flood areas ( Nyerere/Mtumwa jeni /Sebleni and Sogea Shehias) will be well accessed.

The expected community mapping will involve different stakeholders such as 50 students from the Zanzibar School of Health, 20 Students from Zanzibar Youth Mappers, 30 Zanzibar Climate Change Alliance Volunteers, 5 staffs from Zanzibar Disaster Management Unit, 20 community members 5 from each four identified shehias.

The team expected to collect a series of disaster-related data touching on flood from these prone areas, roads water drainage infrastructure, household surveying.

The proposed areas faced with rapidly urbanizing with numbers of unplanned areas in which by 90 percent of the dwellers are located hazard-prone areas.

Community knowledge is the concrete reason to understanding the extent of these problems and how to solve it thus why ZACCA will hardly train all aforementioned stakeholders and communities on how to use cheap and widely available tools, such as mobile phones, GPS units, and satellite imagery to collect data on risks from these expected prone flood areas.

What motivates you to work on this issue?

(what is the reason that triggered, inspired you to work on this issue, we recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words.)

As we all know that flood is one among of the extensive disaster always faced most of African countries especially in vulnerable areas such as Nyerere , Sogea and Mwantenga as this well explained in a proposal.

Thus the project will mostly directly used on solving and uncovering local community problems and challenges particularly floods and other related challenges.

The project put stress on gender consideration where the inclusion of youths and marginalized groups is highly prioritize hence a strong gender balanced representation across the mentioned stakeholders and sectors is well considered .

Have you worked on solving the same issue before?

Yes

If yes, what have you already done to solve this issue?

(Please be specific and highlight your greatest accomplishments, We recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words.) If none, write N/A

Many have been accomplished in the work done such as group of women and youth mapper in which then become an expert in different institution.

Also through our previous we have encourage the central government in other floods and the proper infrastructures have been improved such as drainage and ponds.

If yes, what challenges have you faced in your work to solve this issue, and how did you respond to these challenges?

(Please be specific and highlight your biggest challenges and how did you solve them, We recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words.) If none, write N/A

Many challenges have been encounter before , during and even after the work.

1. Misconception of the community about our works, most of them disappointed us during the time of mapping but we keep patient and teach them well the aim of our community work.

2. We take the volunteers from different source example university and NGOs , we started work with them very good but at the middle the number reduced because of a small amount of allowance but unfortunately we replace with committed others.

3. Lack of funding we still encounters thus why this proposal is made.

If no, what do you anticipate as challenges while working towards solving the issue?

(Please be specific and highlight the biggest challenge you might face when working on this project ,We recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words.)If none, write N/A

2. Merge Zanzibar local community involvement in open mapping and have the necessary resources they need to grow and contribute to the solutions of the granular challenges that affect their daily livelihood especially in flood issues related

3. Build Capacity of community-based organizations (CBOs), non-governmental organizations (NGOs),students and even government through their department with mapping and GIS skills to tackle community’s technical problems and this will help the growth of the Zanzibar Open Street Map communities .

4. Raise awareness of community on how to tackle and to have preparedness of disaster such as floods and other.

5. The expected data will build upon the already existing data so as to further develop the city flood model to help predict and prepare for future flooding.
