Proposal

This section will be removed after the approval.

This value is proposed for any surface used for culture of any kind of trees. The production can be a fruit (apple, olive, lemon, hazelnuts, chestnuts, etc....), wood or bark (wicker, cork, yew (used for producing paclitaxel) but not by destruction of the tree as it is in a forest), sap or resin (latex[1]), other (truffle)...

The discussion on the proposed feature Plantage[2] showed the need of such a tag, but the word plantage appeared wrong. The word orchard seems more adequate and in general better.

The value is generic enough to be interpreted by renderers even if they don't implement the second level tag trees=*. A more accurate renderer could render differently the different values of the trees tag.

Use

General Use

An orchard is an intentional planting of trees or shrubs maintained for food production. Orchards comprise fruit or nut-producing trees grown for commercial production. [3]

The tag can also apply to a fruit garden, generally synonymous with an orchard, although it is set on a smaller non-commercial scale and may emphasize berry shrubs in preference to fruit trees."

The tag cannot be used for a garden producing vegetables under some fruit trees when the vegetable production is the main use and the trees are too scarce.

The soil can be covered with grass or be naked, but generally worked yearly. The production is gathered.

Bellow is a list of some possible species [4]

Tropical areas
  • Banana plant
  • Cacao
  • Coconut palm
  • Coffea
  • Durian
  • Guava
  • Mango tree
  • Papaya
  • Rambutan
  • Tea plant
Subtropical areas
  • Avocado
  • Custard apple
  • Date Palm
  • Lemon
  • Lychee
  • Mandarin
  • Olive (olive grove)
  • Orange
  • Macadamia
Temperate areas
  • Almond tree
  • Apple trees.png Apple tree
  • Apricots tree
  • Bayberry
  • Blackberry
  • Blueberry
  • Cherry trees.png Cherry tree
  • Chestnut tree
  • Cranberry
  • Ginkgo
  • Governor's plum
  • Hazelnut trees.png Hazel
  • Peach
  • Pear tree
  • Pecan
  • Walnut
  • Persimmon tree
  • Plum tree
  • Raspberry
  • Sand pear

Special Uses

As exceptions, some tree plantations can be tagged as orchard in OSM, although they don't produce fruit nor nut : tree plantations of oaks for truffles or cork are examples of such specific uses.

The case of willow plantation for wicker is not fixed. We need more information on cultivation practice. Cultural practices are closed the previous cases. The question is about the gather. Is the whole plant cut or only part (branches) ?

The use of the second level tag produce=* is recommended.

Special species list
  • Oak for truffles
  • Oak for cork

Rejected Uses

  • A Tree nursery could not be mapped using this tag..

Tagging

As we are mapping what is on the ground, the value should be the name of the trees and not of the production. E.g.
In addition of the trees tag, when the name of the tree is not enough :

Rendering

Main Pattern

  • A renderer could render the area with green dots on brown background. Orchard.png

Specific Patterns

Four renderings of orchards with an alternative rendering of the vineyard Orchard.png     Orchard with unkwnown trees Apple trees.png     Apple trees Cherry trees.png     Cherry trees Hazelnut trees.png     Hazels Vineyard.png     vineyard
  • More accurate renderers could render, according to what they implement, green symbols on brown background. E.g.
    • Apple trees Apple trees.png
    • Cherry trees Cherry trees.png
    • Hazels Hazelnut trees.png

Suggestions for creating a new pattern

  • All the patterns are 24x24 px
  • The background color is of landuse=field : #E6DDD0
  • The leaves color is of landuse=forest : #B1CB9D
  • The fruit shape is about 9 px diameter centered : once at 6px,6px, once at 18px, 18px (top-left : 0px, 0px)

    • It's not a vote, it's an opinion poll. And sorry for you if many contributors prefer to search a consensus before tagging, not after. And if you don't like the method, it's not a reason to reject the proposal. Just ignore it. -- Pieren 15:10, 15 October 2009 (UTC)

  • I don't like this proposal. though I like the tag itself, I disagree with some of the proposed values. Many of the mentioned berries never grow in orchards (blueberry, blackberry, etc), and some values can be joined together like various types of apples, plums or pears. This is not a rejection of the landuse=orchard tag, but a dismissal of many of the values of the additional tags. --Skippern 23:57, 18 October 2009 (UTC)

  • I like this proposal. -- Srmixter 1:09, 24 October 2009 - yes, but leave off "trees" ie just trees=apple, not trees=apple_trees, and only use for trees not for berries, maybe use something like plants=strawberries or something similiar
  • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. because I oppose the required plural attribute ("apple_trees"). I would vote yes if a singular attribute ("tree=apple") was allowed. Let's start a second proposal in order to discuss whether singular ("apple") or plural ("apples") is allowed. Once again: I oppose long attributes like "trees=apple_trees". --FK270673 14:37, 25 October 2009 (UTC)
  • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. --VonLausitzOelpen 15:56, 26 October 2009 (UTC) let's have a more common attribute for the planting to tag other planting than trees too, e.g., tea or hops

  • The pool has got 92 % of votes in favour of this proposal : it can realy been considered as accepted.

I would just add that the list of plants is not closed. Maybee the tea[6] could be added for it is a plant * growing like a tree in nature, * remaining several years on the place. Maybe hops could take place in the list though it is not a tree but herbaceous plant [7] like banana plant
