The vote is for a move to tourism=museum (rather than attraction=museum, as the original proposer suggested), as it does not require creation of a new top-level tag. Creation of an 'attraction' key could be done as another proposal.
Rationale
Museum is already in the Map Features list, as historic=museum, however this is a proposal to move museum to a different key, as 'historic' implies an ancient site, rather than, say, a newly-built museum building. This is significant as renderers may want to render all nodes with the 'historic' key as a generic icon, rather than different icons for different possible values.
There are a few possible alternatives:
tourism=museum fits in nicely with the existing set of tourism tags, but arguably museums are not just tourism attractions, but also for locals. Indeed, many small museums have a largely local audience, rather than attracting mainly international tourists.
amenity=museum just doesn't feel right to me. Museums are not 'amenities', and this key should be reserved for more practical points of interest.
leisure=museum might fit, but seems to apply more to sporting facilities.
attraction=museum - This is a new key, which the original proposer was suggesting. It would designate a generic visitor attraction, either for tourists, locals or both, and could contain zoos, art galleries, theme parks, aquariums, observation wheels (London Eye), and so on. This is still a possibility, but the move to a new attraction key can be put forward as a new proposal.
Opinions
I agree with the proposal to move it away from 'historic' because while the move is a bit of a pain, 'historic' seems nonesensical for some cases. Museums can be on very modern topics. e.g. Some science musuems are targeted at kids, and don't present anything historic at all.
Likewise with modern "museums of art" (although another issue is whether these should be classed as museums. I'll discuss that at Proposed features/Art gallery I guess)

Museums should be able to be areas as well as nodes, since some are rather large. [blarson]
Just being pedantic, but Map Features lists this as historic=museum not historical=museum. I also agree that moving the value to amenity=museum or I think better, tourism=museum, makes sense. MikeCollinson 04:24, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
