When tagging a subdivision of country (e.g. states or provinces), ISO3166-2=* indicates the ISO 3166-2 country subdivision code of that area. This code consists of an ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country code followed by a dash and further uppercase letters or digits, and is used in many software systems. You can use the ISO Online Browsing Platform to lookup these codes.
This tag can be added to:
- a node representation of the subdivision (for example tagged as
place=state); - a boundary relation of the subdivision (for example tagged as
boundary=administrativeandadmin_level=4).
A further key ISO3166-2:2=* can be added with a second ISO 3166-2 code, for rare cases where two distinct codes are available for the same territory (e.g. BQ-BO and NL-BQ1 for Bonaire).
See Country code#ISO 3166-2 for more information about ISO 3166.
