In OSM, this key was mostly used for bulk imports, but also when you base your edits on a data set. OpenHistoricalMap has different guidelines: OpenHistoricalMap/Tags. More info below.
Source information on object level is often considered deprecated. Please consider attributing and naming the source meta information on the changeset instead. and/or contributors wiki page instead.
Note that any user of OSM data may filter OSM data in any way imaginable, including in a way that (intentionally or unintentionally) removes attribution tags. The only legally required publicly visible attribution is [1]. Therefore, no tag is an acceptable place for legally required attribution!

OHM data is in the public domain by default via a CC0 dedication. If you copy data wholesale from a copyrighted (but freely licensed) third-party source, you should respect its license by adding license=* and Key:attribution=* tags to each individual feature.
