This tag indicates that a route relation is part of Washington State's state route system. The state route number is given as a bare number in ref=*. For example, State Route 20 is tagged route=road network=US:WA ref=20.

For backwards compatibility, each member highway=* way is redundantly tagged with a ref=SR * tag, such as SR 20. This is an intentionally human-readable tag that should only be displayed verbatim. Any data consumer that needs to do more, such as displaying a route shield, should consult the route relation.

History

Washington state routes previously carried ref=* tags beginning with WA. This prefix was replaced by SR in 2026. [1]
