Holy pictures are small religious monuments that usually show Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, or other important holy figures. They are mostly placed on tree trunks, posts, rocks or simple structures along roads and paths. They are very common in Central Europe.

Holy pictures are often used instead of crosses or shrines because they are simpler and less likely to be damaged when trees fall.

How to map

Place a node node at the centre of holy picture and add historic=wayside_shrine + wayside_shrine=picture

Picture on a column: wayside_shrine=picture or wayside_shrine=column?

  • If the column merely serves as a support for the image (for example, a simple wooden post), then it should be tagged as wayside_shrine=picture.
  • However, if the column itself has architectural, artistic, or heritage value and forms an integral part of the shrine, then wayside_shrine=column is more appropriate.
