Hi, please propose any changes to the English version here first. We do not want to make very many edits going forward as that will require revisits to the translations. --Bgirardot (talk) 01:32, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

> suggested edits to the TM Welcome Letter 1. Bold important statement in the intro of the letter 2. Contacting us and communicating > have HOT Slack as main mode of communication, followed by humanitarian mailing list then OSM Forum (which should be removed if no one is actively monitoring it). I deleted the kiwi irc since it has not been used for so long and we get spam messages as well. 3. Learning resources and documentation - shortened the list of link to the main page: https://tasks.hotosm.org/learn/, then OSM wiki main page. For your review. --Arnalielsewhere --Arnalielsewhere (talk) 22:57, 30 March 2021 (UTC)21:41 30 March 2021 (UTC)

Working version for edits and proposals

Welcome

Hi, my name is Courtney, I am also a volunteer mapper and member of the Community Working Group and we get the honor of welcoming you to the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team community!

Volunteer humanitarian mappers are making a real difference on the ground in the areas we map. We can not thank you enough for your help and contributions.

The most important thing is that if you have any questions, please ask! We love to answer questions, it helps the whole community when people ask questions.

You can jumpstart your mapping journey using the Tasking Manager through this page which has videos and manuals for beginners, validators and managers: https://tasks.hotosm.org/learn/

  • The best way to ask is to join the HOT Slack community (specifically the #mapper-support channel) which have many topic focused channels as well as channels for general chat, introductions and random thought; sign up at https://slack.hotosm.org
  • You can also join the humanitarian mailing list, where there are a lot of friendly people, both new mappers and experts: https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/hot

In closing, we want to say: Welcome, we are very happy you stopped by and we hope to see more of you in the future. Thank you again and best wishes from the whole Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team Community!

Learning resources and documentation

Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team leverages the resources of the great open data project called OpenStreetMap, a more general mapping project that covers the world and is also built by volunteers.

  • You can learn how to get started with OpenStreetMap on this step by step guide:
    http://learnosm.org/en/beginner/
  • You can learn more about using the iD web based editor here (in multiple languages):
    http://learnosm.org/en/beginner/id-editor/
  • If you like mapping and want to do more of it, we encourage you to use the dedicated OpenStreetMap editor called JOSM. It is very similar to a lot of computer drawing programs and is pretty easy to get started using. If you enjoy mapping, JOSM can make some of the repetitive parts much simpler. You can learn about the JOSM editor here:
    http://learnosm.org/en/josm/
  • The OpenStreetMap wiki has very good resources and documentation about mapping in general:
