New Business
- UVa School of Data Science partnership proposal
- Lane - fellow at UofVirginia data science, more familiar with wikimedia, but wants to involve OSM
- Grad capstone - MachineLearning-centric
- Fee waiver for OSM for project involvement
- The ask:
- Work on the application
- Work begins in August (next school year)
- Finding someone to advise - Mikel at Mapbox, for example
- Interweaving OSM into academia
- Striving for less of a corporate vibe at the university
- All partnerships are good for OSM
- Find alignment with OSM’s future direction
- mapping undermapped places
- Suggest campaigns to promote to the community
- Identifying mapper’s patterns through their journey
- Applying an ML perspective on the type of work Jennings has done
- Intrinsic analysis
- Feature detection
- Timeline - wants to kick off the application with help of Maggie, Minh and Diane
- OSM can be used to measure SDGs - have findings come out of this process
- Respond to Lane and set up a meeting
- RMS open letter
- There is a lot of corroboration on the poor behavior of Stallman
- Should OSM get involved?
- The whole FSF board is called for being removed - strong reaction
- Maybe wait and see to let the conversation evolve
- Maggie has been attending opensource community spaces and is building relationships. Making stances is awkward.
- Most signatories are part of the FSF ecosystem and issues oriented. We are a bit outside.
- Decision: OSMUS won’t sign for now
Open Discussion
- How to interact with unofficial OSMUS platforms
- Discord channel “OSMUS” findable through community index - wouldn’t close it down or rename it
- Only held spam - damaging to our community if folks find this first
- We endorse our slack channel
- Youth mappers may have this issue a lot
- Should we take an active position - do we have the bandwidth to chase this down
- OSM.US domain is still for sale - buy?
- Create a policy - to point to when/if these conversations happen
- Also - emphasize where we DO communicate
Next Meetings
- Next meeting of Board likely April 27th 3pm EDT, but poll in slack
- Poll for informal meeting in May coming on slack
Adjournment
