Your project

This is an opportunity for you to tell us about your project. In this section we'd like to hear about your community, which local challenge your project addresses, what you plan to do and how, your sustainability plan, and how you plan to share your stories.

Describe the local challenge your project is addressing

In this section please describe in detail the challenge that your project addresses. We recommend your response be a minimum of 200 words and a maximum of 400 words.

Zambia has increase of covid 19 especially in the capital Lusaka with Zambia’s overall number of cases standing at 53,352, 45443 recoveries and 745 deaths as of today and the numbers are still increasing at a faster rate. And for this reason OpenDataLab Zambia understand how WASH is essential to protecting human health during the COVID-19 outbreak. Hand hygiene, in particular, is one of the most important measures to prevent the spread of diseases, including COVID-19. Functioning handwashing facilities with water and soap are necessary to practice safe hand hygiene but 3 billion (2 out of 5) people globally lacked this critical service in their home based on the latest estimates. The presence of a handwashing facility with soap and water on premises has been identified as the priority indicator for global monitoring of hygiene. OpenDataLab Zambia through this project will help identify hand washing facilities in public places through mapping the availability and distribution of standard washing facilities such as schools, churches, health facilities, out posts, markets, public transport and other public places in order to mitigate the spread of covid 19. This data will help in statial modelling and disease surveillance.

Describe your project

In this section, please provide specific details about your mapping objectives. This should include: how you will contribute to help solve the local challenge you are addressing, what you aim to achieve with funding, what volume of mapping you plan to complete and how, and the number individuals are you aiming to include in mapping activities. We recommend your response be a minimum of 200 words and a maximum of 400 words.

The project will focus on mapping the hand washing services in six (6) peri urban areas in Lusaka such as George compound, Kanyama, Madevu,Mtendere, Chazanga and Chawama. The mapping will focus on is on mapping the availability and distribution of standard washing facilities in schools, churches, health facilities, out posts, markets, public transport and other public places. This data will help in statial modelling and disease surveillance. We intend to involve 70 mappers from youthmappers and the community of which 60% will be women or girls and the youth who are the marginalized group. This project will help stakeholders like National Water Supply and Sanitation Council (NWASCO) and Lusaka Public Health department ensure that schools, markets, hospital, outreach posts and other public places in the peri-urban have access to clean water supply during this pandemic with soap. The availability of funding will help us in running this project in order to ensure safe and equitable access to hand washing services in the areas of interest hence mitigating the spread of COVID19.

Describe your sustainability plan

In this section please describe how your activities will continue post-funding. If you are applying for funding to purchase equipment, explain who will store/use the equipment you purchase, and if you have long term sustainability plans for your community's development. We recommend your response be a minimum of 200 words and a maximum of 400 words.

The data generated by this project will be sustained through partnerships with organizations that will be beneficiaries of the data. Some of the organisations interested in the data are University of Maryland as the data will be used in their research programs in partnership with the Ministry of Health. Lusaka City Council Public Health department to enforce the public health guidelines in the areas of interest. NWASCO service level agreement for 2020 enforces that all places should adhere to the new JMP hygiene ladder focusing on handwashing which ensures the presence of a handwashing facility with soap and water on premises has been identified as the priority indicator for global monitoring of hygiene.

What are your community defined project goals, and how do you define project success?

Please explain you project goals. This can include: setting goals such as "we will train X number of new mappers", "we will register as a legal entity", or "the data will be used by X", and why these goals are important to your community such as "we intent to be legally registered so that we can receive more grant funding in the future", "we intend to engage X number of women in mapping activities so that we can empower local women" or "we want to build a partnership with X so that our data will be used and trusted". We recommend your response be a minimum of 200 words and a maximum of 400 words.

Our project goal is to make sure there is availability and distribution of standard washing facilities in schools, churches, health facilities, out posts, markets, public transport and other public places and to also increase the number of our community membership and make sure that there is also an increase in female participation in the mapping. Therefore, during our project, we are going to train 70 new mappers of which 60% will female. The other goal of our project is to have a long term partnership with University of Maryland in research as this will help our community in capacity building. We are also going to build partnership with the National Water Supply and Sanitation Council (NWASCO) who want the data. NWASCO one of the agencies that we will be working with in the area of WASH programs

What are your community's long term goals?

Please give describe your community's vision. This can include: where you see your community in five years time, how you want your data to be used, future partnerships you'd like to establish, or how you would like your community to grow (or not!). We recommend your response be a minimum of 200 words and a maximum of 400 words.

Our Vision to be the leading Open Data Community in Zambia in terms of having a community that has access to hand washing facilities in all public places and ensuring that women or girls champion this cause. In five years from now we want to see a community that will fully understand the importance of hand hygiene especially during this pandemic and to be the leading OSM community in Southern Africa. We want to make a strong partnership with government ministries and other international organization Our data is and will be used for development planning and also serve as a critical resource when relief organizations are responding to disasters, public health emergencies, and political crisis. We would like to see our community grow through partnership, human capacity development and through networking and Knowledge sharing with other organizations.

List the tools you intend to use during your project and why

Please describe which tools you plan to use to collect, update, clean, or store you data and why. For example: "we plan to use HOT's Tasking Manager to coordinate volunteers" or "we will upload our data to X platform because..." We recommend your response be a minimum of 200 words and a maximum of 400 words.

During our project we are going to use HOT Taking Manager to create tasks that we will be used for remote mapping and healthsites.io for health facilities mapping. ODK Collect app/Kobo Collect app for field data collection during the project, we will upload our data to Kobo server and QGIS for cleaning data and map creation. We will use these tools and apps because we are have used them in the previous projects, they are easier to use for training, data collection and effective when analyzing data collected.

Explain how you plan to share your stories

Please give examples of how you will use share your stories with others. This can include: how you will publicise your news, where you will collect media content, how you will use social media channels, and if you will reach out beyond your immediate network to share your stories. We recommend your response be a minimum of 200 words and a maximum of 400 words.

Our stories will be shared through our social Media platforms and we are going to write 2 blogs of our project one at the beginning of the project and the other one at the end of project which will be shared on our official websites and other social media handles. We also share our stories through the stakeholders partnering with us (NWASCO, University and the City Council) who will share with the other partners they work with in their networks. We also plan to utilize local media to publish our findings.

Partnerships

Successful applications will demonstrate one or more partnerships with a local data user. Priority will be given to applications for which the data has been requested by a partnering organisation, or where the partner organisation has expressed interest in collecting the data for a specific use or intervention. Example partners include local non-government organisations (NGOs), community based organisations (CBOs), local governments, companies, universities, schools, and other academic institutions.

Describe who will use your data

It is important that the data you generate during the project is useful, and that it will be used to advance humanitarian and/or development challenges locally. In this section, please include: if the data you will be collecting has been requested by a partnering organisation, if there is an established formal relationship with the partnering organisation, if there is an existing MoU between you and the partnering organisation, and how long have you been working with the partnering organisation. If your organisation or community is going to be the data user, please describe how you will use the data, and how it ties in with your organisation's work. We recommend your response be a minimum of 200 words and a maximum of 400 words.

The National Water Supply and Sanitation Council (NWASCO) is one of the institution that need data that we are going to generate. The National Water Supply and Sanitation Council (NWASCO) is mandated under the Water Supply and Sanitation Act No. 28 of 1997. During the outbreak of Covid-19 NWASCO is trying to make sure that all public places have hand wash facilities to prevent the spread of Coivd-19. Other organizations that need the data is University of Maryland who are reaching on the Covid-19 and the Lusaka city council under public health who have been our partners for a year now in mapping solid waste management in Lusaka. During this project we are focusing on the mapping hand washing facilities in public places in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The LCC want the data to see if the people in the markets are following the health guidelines from the ministry of health of having hand washing facilities and to make sure that there is water and soap at all time. Other partners that we are going to work with and need data that is going to be generated are the World Bank and GIZ who are also helping in the fight against Covid-19.

Describe any other partnerships you plan to mobilise or establish for the purpose of the project

In this section, please describe any additional partners you might be working with. If there are no additional partners (beyond the data user) this must be stated here. We recommend your response be a minimum of 200 words and a maximum of 400 words.

Our future partnership is to work with NWASCO, Lusaka City Council other OSM Communities in our neighboring countries such as OSM Malawi, and OSM Zimbabwe community and other stakeholders both locally and internationally including the YouthMappers on the Knowledge exchange on the project.

Inclusivity

Successful applications will include a developed strategy for the inclusion of women, girls, and marginalised groups in mapping activities. This includes the number of women, girls or marginalised groups you plan to engage, and the way in which you plan to interact with them.

How will you ensure that your project activities are inclusive?

Please describe how you will engage women and girls, or other marginalised communities in your mapping activities. Please include the number of women, girls or marginalised groups you plan to work with and how, and at which point in your activities you plan to engage them. During this project we are going to make sure that there is gender balanced this will be done through the selection field data collectors. The local community mappers will be the ones collecting data in their areas and priority will be given to women and girls and youths who are marginalized. We are going to have 40 female mappers and 30 male mappers. The point which this people will be needed it is from the started from mapping online up to the field work activities.

Expansion

Successful applications will show how communities intend to grow community engagement. This includes a practical approach on how many new mappers you aim to recruit and how they will be involved in community activities. Priority will be given to communities that also include a plan for ongoing engagement beyond the grant period. If this is not relevant to your project, please explain why.

Explain how you plan to expand your mapping community

In this section, please include: your approach to recruiting new mappers, how will you engage new mappers, how many new members you plan to recruit, and how will you retain community members throughout the duration of project and beyond. We recommend your response be a minimum of 200 words and a maximum of 400 words.

During this project we intend to recruit new mappers from the six peri urban areas because they know and understand their community better. We will have 70 new mappers of which 60% will be female this is to encourage women or girls participating in mapping. The members of the community will be retained during the duration of the project and beyond through the active partnership with NWASCO, Lusaka City Council and other stakeholders where there will be activities during and after the project for the member of the community to teach and educate the pupils on how to proper use hand sanitizer, wash their hands and how to properly wear a face mask.
