Information About the Project
What is the problem that you are working to address in your community?
(In this section please describe in detail the challenge that your project addresses. We recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words.)
Based on the existing relationship between IRDP YouthMappers and its Community, we have been able to identify three problems that are faced by the community of Mnadani.
Mnadani Ward is challenged to have poor infrastructure.
According to a small survey conducted by IRDP YouthMappers through Mnadani Ward Executive Officer. In Mnadani ward a large number of roads are unpaved, but there are some roads that are not easily passable and lead to the absence of daladala service. But there is also a lack of road drainage systems that cause water stagnation during rainy season and cause inconvenience to some roads, especially in the areas of Institute of Rural Development Planning - Dodoma.
2. Insufficient Social Services such as Water, Electricity and Health Center
Mnadani Ward also has the challenge of having a shortage of social services such as the Health Center compared to the existing population. But an area like Ndachi has a lack of access to water services that will cause people in this area to live in difficult conditions.
3. Lack of Local Offices Despite the value of such offices in the county.
Many streets in Mnadani ward do not have Local Offices, this is due to people may not know the value of these Offices. So, it leads to difficult access to services but also a difficult working environment for Local Executive Officers.
What motivates you to work on this issue?
(what is the reason that triggered, inspired you to work on this issue, we recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words.)
What motivates us to do this work is to be interested in working with our community because even us, we live in this community. There are many problems we face as a resident of these areas, especially during the rainy season. Many areas are flooded and lead to inaccessibility, especially areas around IRDP. But also we want to help this community because we study in order to help them. And we would also like to establish good relations between IRDP YouthMappers Chapter, the Institute of Rural Development Planning and the Community at large. With the education we received and the skills we had, we think this is the right time to work with this community and to ensure their problems are identified and conveyed to the right authorities in order to be solved.
Have you worked on solving the same issue before?
If yes, what have you already done to solve this issue?
(Please be specific and highlight your greatest accomplishments, We recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words.) If none, write N/A
If yes, what challenges have you faced in your work to solve this issue, and how did you respond to these challenges?
(Please be specific and highlight your biggest challenges and how did you solve them,We recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words.) If none, write N/A
If no, what do you anticipate as challenges while working towards solving the issue?
(Please be specific and highlight the biggest challenge you might face when working on this project ,We recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words.)If none, write N/A
The biggest challenge happening in solving these problems. In our area, especially Tanzania there is a complex process in solving these issues and the whole issue of the authorities involved in monitoring and responding as a whole. Even if we submit these problems to the relevant authorities it may take a long time for this problem to be resolved. For example, on the water side it can take a long time for pipes to reach those areas. But also, it can be a problem that is in the process of being addressed. The same goes for electricity and essential services. This can be a problem for these areas to be able to get support. With the support of OMDTZ we would also like to connect with private institutions that will be able to assist in solving the problems of the respective wards.
Describe your sustainability plan
(In this section please describe how your activities will continue post-funding. If you are applying for funding to purchase equipment, explain who will store/use the equipment you purchase, and if you have long term sustainability plans for your community's development. We recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words.)
IRDP YouthMappers is a group that operates under the Institute of Rural Development Planning and is found within the Institute all the time because every time leadership ends then new leadership is formed. If we get this fund IRDP YouthMappers and the Institute of Development Planning - Dodoma, will continue to support its community for the entire period it will be. But also IRDP YouthMappers plans to open a Local OSM Community that will be registered and will be working more broadly and able to reach its community more easily. But there will also be a continuation of training every weekend to continue to have mappers who are active and good. But also IRDP as an institute has promised to support this group in various fields, such as providing training materials and a class to do this training. Therefore, if we succeed in securing this micro grant the purchased equipment will continue to run the work of YouthMappers. But we will also continue to strive for more so that this education can reach the community around us. One of the main plans of IRDP YouthMappers is to ensure that openstreetmap and other open source platform are used by students of IRDP and Tanzania in general.
But also IRDP is ready to support IRDP YouthMappers who are studying Urban Planning and Environment Management to integrate OpenStreetMap and Urban Planning Issues, possibly even preparing a local area plan as a demo to showcase the application of OpenStreetMap.
What are your community defined project goals
(Please explain your project goals. This can include: setting goals such as "we will train X number of new community, "we will register as a legal entity", or "the data will be used by X", and why these goals are important to your community such as "we intend to engage X number of women in mapping activities so that we can empower local women” We recommend your response be a minimum of 150 words and a maximum of 300 words.)
The main objective of the IRDP YouthMappers is to expose and convey the dangers and problems facing the Mnadani community to the relevant authorities, so that they can be treated. There will be an exercise to do data collection and mapping for the entire Mnadani Ward in order to identify physical problems. The data that will be collected will be conveyed and shared to the relevant authorities such as TARURA, TANROAD and others, but also to the Institute of Rural Development Planning-Dodoma and the ward as a whole will be able to access this data, this will help in treatment of these problems. IRDP YouthMappers will be organizing two Workshops/Mapathon that will teach students how to do data collection and mapping in this Mnadani area. This exercise will also focus on updating the OpenStreetMap Platform. IRDP YouthMappers is also planning to establish an OSM Community that will be outside the IRDP and will have a broad scope to reach its community. But also for the entire project period, 5 people from Mnadani ward will be trained and able to participate in the whole mapping exercise. And also students and staff from IRDP and UDOM will be able to be involved. IRDP YouthMappers also plans to train 10 women who will be involved in this project to be able to assist them in the exercise of being able to adopt this technology, so that they too can help their peers.
What are your project long-term goals?
(Please describe your project vision. This can include: where you see your project in five years' time, how you want your data to be used, future partnerships you'd like to establish, or how you would like your project to grow (or not!). We recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words)
IRDP YouthMappers plans to register an OSM Community Which will be able to work in and out of the Institute. This community will be able to continue to work within its community as well as to continue supporting YouthMappers Chapters in Dodoma. This community will be engaging in exploring and addressing the problems of its community to the relevant authorities in order to get rid of their addressed challenges. But also, IRDP YouthMappers will establish a website platform that will update the activities of the group with important data. IRDP YouthMappers will launch a youtube channel in which there will be a series of training on various issues related to Geospatial Information System and OpenStreetmap platform, and other tools. But also, IRDP YouthMappers will continue to create new mappers from the Institute of Rural Development Planning.
List the tools you intend to use during your project and why
(Please describe which tools you plan to use to collect, update, clean, or store you data and why. We recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words.)
IRDP YouthMappers will use a variety of tools throughout the duration of the project in order to achieve the best completion of this exercise.
JOSM and iD Editor - For digitizing for areas of Miyuji and Mnadani. This will help during the Data Collection period. This will help in Updating OpenStreetMap Basemap.
QGIS - For making local maps for one ward either Mnadani/Mnadani. And these Maps will be distributed in the Relevant Wards.
Mapillary - For showing road condition during data collection period. This will enable the people of those areas to be modified their areas if this data reaches the relevant authorities like TARURA.
Open Data Kit (ODK) and Open Map Kit (OMK) - It will be used to create data collection of essential services and roads, in order to be able to update them on OpenStreetMap and remain on the Institute Server.
What additional knowledge or skills do you need to improve the effectiveness of the project?
(if there is any addition training you will need example how to use open source tools ,how to write good report etc please identify them below and why, We recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words.) If none, write N/A
IRDP YouthMappers will need support from OMTDZ to be able to complete the whole operation and get good results on this project. We will need to get trainer on good report writing. But also, IRDP YouthMappers would like to get training on how to use the Open Data Kit (ODK) and Open Map Kit (OMK) on the form-making side to be used in the data collection exercise. Before we got training on how to create forms online, but we need to be able to create forms using Microsoft Excel. But we also need someone who could guide us in making good Local Maps using QGIS that we will hand over to the locals community available in Mnadani Ward.
Explain how you plan to share your stories
(Please give examples of how you will use to share your stories with others. This can include: how you will publicise your news, where you will collect media content, how you will use social media channels, and if you will reach out beyond your immediate network to share your stories. We recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words.)
Before, we did not have a good platform to be able to share our story, but now IRDP YouthMappers plans to set up a Website that will reach out to its community. But also, we will use social media like Facebook Page, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Slack Channel to reach out to our communities and make sure the information reaches them. But also, for the activities that we will do, we will make sure that we post them on the YouthMappers Blog on time to achieve the information that reaches the intended audience. But we will also have a Youtube Channel that we will be using to post our training, to enable Youth Mappers of Tanzania and outside Tanzania to learn about all issues related to GIS and Open-Source Tools.
Describe who will own/access and use the data
(It is important that the data you generate during the project is useful, and that it will be used to advance humanitarian and/or development challenges locally. In this section, please include: if the data you will be collecting has been requested by who , if there is an established formal relationship with any organization , and if there is an existing MoU between you and the partnering organisation, and how long have you been working with the partnering organisation. If your organisation or community is going to be the data user, please describe how will they use the data, and how they will access the data also is there possibility of other similar organizations to access and own the data . We recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 400 words.)
The data that will be collected by IRDP YouthMappers Dodoma during the project period will be used to update the OpenStreetMap server and also to be used by the group itself. IRDP YouthMappers will use this data for learning and also to create Local Maps for different wards. Also, because IRDP YouthMappers is a group that is made up of students then this data is used for learning purposes. But also, IRDP YouthMappers is available at the Institute of Rural Development Planning so if there is a need for this data then we will also provide them. But another group that will have access to this data is one of the local government offices in the ward where the Data Collection exercise will be conducted. But there will also be a written agreement (MOU) with the Organization that will require this data.
Describe any other community/organization you plan to approach and share data for the purpose of the project impact
(In this section, please describe any additional partners you might be working with or share data with since they have indicated the need of data that will be collected. If there are no additional partners (beyond the data user) this must be stated here. We recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words.) if none write N/A
This data belongs to the community and public as whole, so through this project we would like to have the opportunity to share this data to the relevant authorities, such as TARURA and NBS. By achieving this we will be able to help our community tremendously. But also through various presentations and workshops we will attend, we would like to find donors and various organizations that will be ready to help this community. But in the case of OpenStreetMap and OMDTZ and any other emerging institution we will be ready to share this data with you so that the project aims to help this community. But we would also like to work with Dodoma Urban City Council, through these we will be able to work with them effectively and share this data. This will help them to identify the problems and difficulties facing Mnadani community. So they may be interested and able to work with us on other issues to solve problems that arise in the community of Dodoma Urban people.
How will you ensure that your project activities will consider gender/children?
(Please describe how you will engage women/girls and school children in your project activities. Please include the number of women, girls or marginalized groups you plan to work with and how, and at which point in your activities you plan to engage them. We recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words).
The IRDP YouthMappers Group plans to engage and train about 10 girls in order to provide them with training and exercise. These girls will be chosen from YouthMappers Chapters and some will be chosen from the local community. One of the challenges in my community is the lack of awareness of these women. So, IRDP YouthMappers will make sure it engages women so they can learn how they can use this technology so that they can solve their problems. But also, IRDP YouthMappers plans to involve students from the University of Dodoma as well as the College of Mining which is close to IRDP Dodoma. These students from these colleges will get a chance to learn a variety of tools.
Open Knowledge Evolution
Explain how you plan to expand your mapping community
(In this section, please include: your approach of working in a peripheral area to expand the knowledge, how will you engage new members from an unexposed community, how many new members you plan to recruit, and how will you retain community members throughout the duration of the project and beyond. We recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words.)
During the Project time it will help IRDP YouthMappers have better relationships with the community around us. So, it will be easier for IRDP YouthMappers and the Institute of Rural Development Planning - Dodoma to be able to work closely with its community. IRDP YouthMappers will ensure that its community receives training during and after the project by strengthening the partnership with its community and other Organizations. But also, we will continue to support other colleges around us such as the Mining College so that they can establish the YouthMappers Chapter at their College. But also, we will try to be closer to the social organizations found in Dodoma and be able to work together to solve various social problems. But we will also be able to register new mappers during the project period that we will be with them together to make sure they understand how to use the osm platform. To ensure that we will have a whatsapp group that will have updates for various.
Describe the communities you are already working with
(This may include local government, private sector, institutions or OSM communities (as examples). If you are not already working with any of the above communities, please state this and explain how you plan to work with other communities in your project. We recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words.)
Before, the IRDP YouthMappers got to work with various communities located in and out of Dodoma. IRDP YouthMappers had the opportunity to work with Open Map Development Tanzania (OMDTZ) in the Ground Truthing project held in 2021 Dodoma. But also, IRDP YouthMappers had previously assisted Red Cross Dodoma in training on how to use various tools for conducting Data Collection in 2020. But also, IRDP YouthMappers has been able to partner with CROWD2MAP in organizing an event at the Institute of Rural Development Planning – Dodoma and University of Dodoma (UDOM). But also, IRDP YouthMappers was able to support the Institute of Rural Development Planning - Mwanza in Field Work Activities held on the 12th of March 2020.
Describe other communities you plan to approach, or establish relationships with, for the purpose of the project
(We recommend your response be a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 300 words.)
At present IRDP YouthMappers aspires to reach out to its community in general in order to maintain good relations and help each other in solving their problems. But also, IRDP YouthMappers aspires to reach out to and work with governmental and non-governmental Urban Planning organizations in order to engage in a wide range of social and professional issues. But also, we love and wish to continue to have good relations with organizations like Open Map Development Tanzania (OMDTZ) and CROWD2MAP, they can continue to support us and involve us in Far Away projects so that we can be good professionals and help the community of Dodoma Together. But also IRDP YouthMappers aspires to work with Resielence Academy on the Dodoma side.
