About

This page describes the import of the datasets provided by DBSN (DataBase di Sintesi Nazionale, "National Summary Database").

It is a geographical database released by IGM (Istituto Geografico Militare, "Italian Military Geographic Institute") containing the most significant territorial information for carrying out thematic analyses and representations at national level.

More info are available at Italy/DBSN.

The import has been discussed on the telegram group exclusively dedicated to this activity (ask Lorenzo Stucchi if you are interested in joining), in recurring online meetings attended by interested mappers and on the community forum (TBD).

This wiki page is the result of consensus there.

The following pages minutely describe each dataset to be imported:

Import Plan Outline

Goals

The goal of this effort is to improve the data available in Italy reusing the high-quality datasets provided by DBSN.

We will replace current admin boundaries which are simplified boundaries imported in 2008 from a dataset provided by ISTAT with better ones provided by IGM. We will import missing toponyms and highways. We will import missing buildings are replace current ones that have a much better precision.

We will manually check each feature to be imported to avoid any possibile issue and we will preserve current tagging data.
