Import Data
Background
Provide links to your sources.
Data source site: http://www.fsihost.com/onondaga/
Data license: Waiver
Link to permission (if required): Import/Catalogue/Onondaga_County_NY_Building_Footprint_Import/Waiver
ODbL Compliance verified: yes
Conversion script: https://gitlab.com/jackarnold/onondaga-building-osm-import
OSM Data Files
OSM files for the import will be generated with a conversion script on-demand.
Import Type
Initially the import will be a one-time import. The first few changesets will be manually reviewed small areas of the available data, which will be imported with JOSM. Future updates will be possible, as the conversion script compares the source data with OpenStreetMap data and removes conflicts.
Data Preparation
Data Reduction & Simplification
The building outlines in the source shapefiles will be compared with existing OpenStreetMap data. Buildings already present will not be imported.
Tagging Plans
All buildings in the source shapefiles will be given the following tags:
- building=yes

- comment=Onondaga County, NY building footprints import

Data Transformation
The source shapefile represents all of the building footprints for Onondaga County. First it must be transformed into the correct CRS for OpenStreetMap. This will then be split into municipalities, allowing for easier import. Overlapping building outlines currently in OpenStreetMap will not be imported.

Data Merge Workflow
Team Approach
This import is currently a solo project. I'm welcome to work with other contributors and can definitely appreciate the help.
Workflow
Detail the steps you'll take during the actual import:
- Download the latest building footprint data
- Run the conversion script
- Open the prepared shapefiles in JOSM
- Compare the building footprints against satellite imagery
- Split reviewed footprints into smaller chunks for import
- Upload to OpenStreetMap under the username import_jarnold (on osm, edits, contrib, heatmap, chngset com.)
QA
Quality assurance will currently be done manually by reviewing the data before import. The JOSM validator will also be used to check for errors.
