This key was mostly used for bulk imports, but also when you base your edits on a data set.

Source information on object level is often considered deprecated. Please consider attributing and naming the source meta information on the changeset instead. and/or contributors wiki page instead.

Note that any user of OSM data may filter OSM data in any way imaginable, including in a way that (intentionally or unintentionally) removes attribution tags. The only legally required publicly visible attribution is [1]. Therefore, no tag is an acceptable place for legally required attribution!
