This is a mostly unused tag to map the staircase part of an address (this applies only in some buildings, not all addresses have a staircase element - even in buildings with multiple staircases).

See addr=* for more details regarding addresses.

Instead of this tag, people mostly use addr:unit=* to tag the staircase part of an address.

If the staircase does not have its own number or letter identifier, a range of addresses within the staircase can be mapped using addr:flats=* instead.

If the staircase has an indentifier but it's not visible in addresses, use ref=* instead.

Background info

This tag was used since 2010 and initially proposed in 2011 but then replaced by the "more generic term" addr:unit=* in the proposal during the RFC phase (i.e. before voting). In late 2017 most occurences of this tag have been retagged in a very short time period (suspected undiscussed edit).
