The key bar=* indicates the presence of a bar (where alcoholic beverages are served) in addition to the primary purpose of being a cafe, restaurant, hotel, teahouse or other feature.

Most often used on a node/area tagged with amenity=* (restaurant, cafe, hotel and others).

As it is suggested to avoid the semicolon value separator (e.g. amenity=cafe;bar, see Semi-colon value separator), the possibility is proposed to choose a top-level tag (amenity=cafe/amenity=restaurant/tourism=hotel), which expresses the primary purpose of the amenity and then add the bar=yes tag for more precise characterization.

If the primary purpose is a bar then you should consider using the amenity=bar

Recommended use

bar=yes:

  • along with / in addition to the primary purpose (amenity=cafe: offering hot beverages, maybe breakfast; amenity=restaurant: serving dishes etc.)
--> people can order alcoholic beverages
--> the cafe/restaurant stays open late into the night (also with the kitchen closed)

Common combinations

Main feature tags

amenity=cafe
amenity=restaurant
