The key date has two different uses:
- 1. Date when the related event happened
historic=*(Status: in use) - 2. Does a clock
amenity=clockalso show the current date? (Status: "approved"
).
Many current uses should be using another tag from the list below (status February 2026). It's suggested to deprecate this key and replace it with two others, see community:135862.
Formatting historic=*
Dates use the ISO 8601 system, which is based on the Gregorian calendar.
Caution: ISO8601 uses the format yyyy-mm-dd, not the common North American model of mm-dd-yyyy
- Examples:
- 2010
- where the year is known, but no more
- 0897 (for 897 AD)
- 1848-07
- where the year and month are known
- 2010-03-31
- for where the full date is known, using the format yyyy-mm-dd
For centuries, use the C-notation.
- Example:
To indicate a time period, use ".." between the beginning and the end.
- Example:
- 2010..2012
- years 2010 to 2012
To indicate several, separate dates, use ";" between the dates.
- Examples:
- 2001;2026
- year 2001 and year 2026
- 2010-01-01;2011-12-31
- for 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2011
Formatting amenity=clock
date=yes– The clock also shows the current date. Default value: nodate=no– The clock does not show the current date.

Possible tagging mistakes
This tag was also heavily used for other, unknown reasons (for example date=2014 added to most minor roads in one rectangle in Mexico)
Some uses by mappers included specifying date when feature was mapped. See survey:date=* or check_date=* instead.
