However, prior to 12/2014, it may have been used for things like ruins=* or when the feature is almost but not completely invisible.
There is some dispute over the use of this, and other lifecycle tags, with the main argument being that OSM is for features existing on the ground. However, this tag is useful for explicitly mapping demolished features that are still visible on outdated satellite imagery, to prevent other mappers from inadvertently remapping them as extant buildings. (The note=* key is a less controversial alternative for this purpose.) Use sparingly.
