digital_access

Background

This key was created to capture the services as part of an OSM mapping project which will be used as part of Falkirk Council’s ‘Towards a Fairer Falkirk’ project. This project is concerned with reducing the inequalities between the wealthiest and poorest in the community. More details can be found here: http://www.falkirk.gov.uk/services/people-communities/poverty-strategy.aspx

Purpose

This key is designed to capture the digital services available to a community. These services will either generally be free, and available on a non-commercial basis. Such services are common for facilities in Libraries, community centers or schools. The 'access' part of this tag is important - the aim is to capture digital resources and services that a community can use free of charge or at a service cost price (e.g. printing charges per page), thus removing barriers for people on restricted incomes.

  • This tag should not be used for commercial services.

Key values

The main digital_access value is intended to be used as an list of services so as to be able to describe a range of services. The service we have captured include 'printer', 'photocopier', 'computer'. How these are used are described below.

Tag Expected Values Notes
digital_access <list of services>
printer The feature has printing facilities available to the public
photocopier The feature has photocopying facilities available to the public
computer The feature has computer facilities available to the public. This is distinct from the commonly used internet_access tag. Here, the purpose is to capture a service that the public can use for a range of computer activities - e.g. word processing, research, email, homework, coding - though we recognise there may be some overlap with the internet_access usage.
digital_access:membership yes / no Is membership required to access the service?
