An email address associated with the object. It is not necessary to include a mailto: prefix.

Public emails only
Add only email addresses that are intended to be public, such as those provided by a business, non-profit, or government agency for inquiries.
Email-addresses which are only available on a website after solving a captcha, or which are in other ways obfuscated to protect against SPAM-bots should not be tagged in OSM.

Contact namespace alternative
There is an alternative contact:email=* tagging approach involving organising various things under a "contact" namespace. That makes tags longer and more complex, but perhaps more organised. This simple email=* tag has the advantage of being shorter, and is used more in the DB.
