The foot_traffic=* tag is used to describe the amount of pedestrian traffic near an highway or amenity.

History

Most, if not all, of these tags are added by https://rackfinder.app/. The subjectivity and verifiability issues of this tag was discussed in their issue tracker.

As of 2026-04-05, this key has been removed from the app again. All tag usage was deleted by

Pietervdvn (on OSM · edits · contribs · heatmap · comments)

on 2026-04-30. The removal was discussed (and kind off approved) on the community forums.

The tag was never discussed or voted for before it came into existence.

High traffic (Public square, ped path, etc)

Medium traffic (Nearby a high traffic area, but not directly visible)

Low traffic (Side of building, parking lot, etc)

No traffic (Back of building, alleyway, etc)

These values are subjective, and should be chosen based on your best evaluation of the area judging by nearby pedestrian plazas, walkways, stores, etc.
