The key handicap=* is added to a golf=hole feature with a value from 1 to 18 (or the total number of holes in the golf course), to specify the official difficulty ranking of a hole in a golf course.

Each hole is assigned a level of difficulty from one to 18, so the most difficult hole is the No. 1 handicap hole, the second most difficult is No. 2 and so on up to 18. Usually this number is recorded on official scorecards for the golf course.

In handicap play, less proficient players will get a certain number of strokes to make the competition more equitable. These strokes are allocated in the order given by the holes' handicap rating.

For handicaps based on sex the tags handicap:men=* and handicap:women=* should be used.
