Some roads and bridges prohibit vehicles over a certain tonnage based on its tare weight: how much the vehicle would weigh if it were completely empty, without any cargo. This kind of legal restriction is authorized by Chap. 1, Art. 1 (x) of the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic as an unladen mass restriction. In the United States, it is known as an empty weight restriction.
The value is expressed in metric tonnes unless otherwise specified. The restriction may be limited to certain kinds of vehicles, such as maxunladenweight:hgv=*
for trucks.
This is the opposite of maxweightrating=*
, which is based on how much the vehicle would weigh when completely full up to the manufacturer's specified maximum load. Both restrictions can apply to a vehicle even when it is partially loaded. For a weight restriction based on the vehicle's weight including its current load, see maxweight=*
.
History
This key was originally proposed as maxemptyweight=*
