For way objects, names can differ by direction of travel. Emerging tagging in the United States applies name:forward=* and name:backward=* tags to name both sides separately using the direction of the way to determine forward and backward depending on the direction of travel in the particular country. In the United States, this means name:backward=* is identical to name:left=* and name:forward=* is identical to name:right=*. The name=* tag can still include both names in order to support different tools.
Of note, in the United States the semicolon is the preferred delimiter. For example Y Road;County Road 32
Y Road;County Road 32 is tagged:
name:left=Y Roadname:right=County Road 32name:backward=Y Roadname:forward=County Road 32name=Y Road;County Road 32
