gem is actually the ISO 639 code for the entire Germanic language family, which includes English. The misuse of this code to represent Transylvanian Saxon was proposed on the talk-de mailing list in 2015  and implemented in (achavi, OSMLab).
Use name:de=* instead for the name in the German language.
