This feature has been labeled as deprecated. The recommended replacement is: a Lifecycle prefix such as disused:*=*, abandoned:*=* or construction:*=*, or in some cases a lifecycle tag such as disused=*, abandoned=* or construction=* (see Comparison of life cycle concepts).
The reason is documented in Deprecated features. You are still free to continue to use or interpret this tag as you see fit since OpenStreetMap does not have “banned features”.
Under no circumstances should you (semi-)automatically change “deprecated” tags to something else in the database on a large scale without conforming to the automated edits code of conduct. Any such change will be reverted.

The working=* tag has been used to identify whether or not a feature is currently operational or working as intended. Such information is instead normally recorded using a lifecycle prefix.

Additionally, some mappers have incorrectly used this tag to describe the operating hours of a feature. The opening_hours=* tag should instead be used for this purpose.
