About your Mapping Community

Tell us a little bit about your mapping community at the moment, some examples of details to include are below, but please provide us with any information you think is relevant. Please write 100-200 words

OSM Kosovo is the community of OSM editors working on mapping Kosovo.

FLOSSK, which sponsors OSM Kosovo, for the past year has been working on the project “OpenStreetMap Kosovo: Developing geographic information systems and skills in Kosovo”, which started in June 2019 and  is expected to be completed by this month.

During the project, professional GIS trainings have been organized, MoUs were signed with municipalities for future cooperation and opening of geographical data, as well as with Kosovo Cadastral Agency from which we have secured street names, municipal boundaries, cadastral zones and settlement points which have been made available to OSM Kosovo community..

For the community we have organized meet-ups, invited local and foreign companies and individuals to present to the audience and OSM GEO-Week. Organized offline and online mapathons, and now at this time together with an after-school program, we have been organizing mapathons with high schools.

We have expanded the community, making 10k+ edits in OpenStreetMap.

Organized a 3-day conference dedicated to GIS and OSM (State of the Map Southeast Europe) with over 150 participants and speakers in October 2019.

We are in the final phase of creating the OSM Kosovo chapter, building a chapter website and visual identity.

What do you need the grant money for?

We want to understand what you plan to buy, how much you plan to buy, and why this will help you to scale your community mapping efforts. There are two tables for you to fill in your response, and you may add more rows as needed. Some examples are in the table for your reference. You are welcome to use a different format in your response, but please make sure to include these details.

Most active mappers of Kosovo and Albania don’t reside in these countries. As a physical organization based in Kosovo, we spend our effort in supporting them and others to be able to map Kosovo from their armchair. While we have provided lots of data to the community, having street level imagery to verify things on the ground would be quite helpful. We believe that free street level imagery would support the mappers to do quality work.

While we already have 2,000 km of travel projected to be photographed under a previous project, it was a trial operation and we intend to get imagery for more of Kosovo’s roads with a quality photographing rig and expand into Albania.
