The primary railway light signals in France are based on six standardized signal head shapes (châssis-écrans), each with two or more lights capable of displaying different states (aspects). These signal heads and their variations are shown below. Unused light positions are covered, and parasols are not installed.

Signal heads

Type "A"

Description 2 or 3 lights
Dimensions 1060 x 600 mm

Type "C"

Description Up to 5 lights
Dimensions 1500 x 600 mm

Type "F"

Description Up to 7 lights
Dimensions 1720 x 1200 mm

Type "H"

Description Up to 9 lights
Dimensions 2020 x 1200 mm

Type "K"

This two-light signal may be installed in either a vertical or horizontal configuration, on a mast or at ground level.

Description 2 lights
Dimensions 665 x 460 mm

Type "R"

  • The shape tag is not used, as distant signals are always presented on R-type heads.
Description Up to 6 lights
Dimensions 1270 x 1220 mm

Type "ID2-ID3"

2 or 3-direction indicator.

  • The shape tag is not used, as the shape is implicit from the signal type and the number of states.
