Organised Editing/Activities/Rio Branco
Mapping the city of Rio Branco, Acre (Brazil)
In the context of the interdisciplinary international Project 'Waterproofing Data: Engaging stakeholders in Sustainable Flood Risk governance for Urban Resilience', the project team is organising a series of collaborative mapping activities, with the participation of local communities and students from different departments of the Federal University of Acre (UFAC) with the aim of generating a detailed map of Rio Branco in OSM.
Rationale
Waterproofing Data is an international project that officially started in October 2018 and will last for until October 2021. The main aim of the project is to investigate the governance of water-related risks, and increase flood resilience of vulnerable communities in São Paulo and Rio Branco, Brazil. The project brings together an interdisciplinary group of researchers and institutions from three collaborating countries: University of Warwick (United Kingdom), Fundação Getulio Vargas (Brazil) and Heidelberg University (Germany), through funding provided by an international association of research councils including Economic and Social Sciences Research Council (ESRC), São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) and German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), in collaboration with NORFACE, the Belmont Forum and the International Science Council within the Transformations to Sustainability (T2S) research programme.
In this context, the research team identified the need to map buildings, roads, waterways and other points of reference for the local community and thus a series of collaborative mapping activities (Mapathons) are organised to facilitate the process. The Mapathons are coordinated by the project's research team and supported by the State of Acre and include mappers from the local community, students from the Federal University of Acre (UFAC) and other participants from the wider city area.
Contact
You can contact Fernanda Lima at emaildefernandalima@gmail.com, Livia Degrossi at liviadegrossi@gmail.com, Vangelis Pitidis at V.Pitidis@warwick.ac.uk or Mario Martins at martins.mariodamata@gmail.com with any questions. We have also instructed our members to watch out for possible changeset comments and reply to them!
Hashtag
We've asked our contributors to use the hashtag #WPD - AC with their edits.
Timeframe
The first Mapathon has taken place on April 8 2020, while the second mapping activity was realised on April 17 2020. The third Mapathon took place on May 12 and more mapping activities will follow. All mapping activities have been organised virtually due to constraints imposed by the COVID-19 lock-down in Brazil and UK.
Tools
We will be using the HOT Tasking Manager and Maxar Premium Imagery (Beta) imagery for our mapping process. We have have already created a project in the HOT Tasking Manager which is open to any Beginner mapper to contribute.
Participants
Our core team consists of the following OSM users:
vaggpit (on osm, edits, contrib, heatmap, chngset com.)
FernandaLeS (on osm, edits, contrib, heatmap, chngset com.)
liviadegrossi (on osm, edits, contrib, heatmap, chngset com.)
Guilherme I Reis (on osm, edits, contrib, heatmap, chngset com.)
GY_OSM (on osm, edits, contrib, heatmap, chngset com.)
There will be more volunteers participating and we'll ask them to link to this page in their user profile.
Measuring our Success
We're planning to have a leaderboard counting how many buildings, roads and other features were added by each user, are planning on presenting the results of each Mapathon to the volunteers with special pizza-related prizes for each user!
Training/Instructions
During our second Mapathon, which was virtually we have introduced volunteers to the objectives and aims of collaborative mapping in their areas. Since the vast majority of volunteers are locals, the introduction was made in Portuguese, and is available in the Youtube channel of our project. Moreover, in order to facilitate the Learning process, we are using the "LearnOSM" pages that target humanitarian mapping but we have also created a detailed tutorial on mapping with OSM in Portuguese along with a video tutorial.
In the created HOTOSM project page in HOT Tasking Manager we provide detailed instructions for mapping in English and Brazilian Portuguese.
Post-Event Clean Up
Our core team will frequently look at new changesets being uploaded with our hashtag, and apply corrections where necessary. Our mappers have also been asked to have their contribution validated when taking their first steps. Validation will be performed by our core team but we will ask the assistance of other experienced mappers from OSM-Brazil and other UK-based mapping communities.
Results
We'll post some concrete results here when we have completed the mapping process in Rio Branco and produce a final report with the changes made in OSM.
