About komoot

Komoot is a route planning software that allows users to plan and customize routes according to a selected sport type (hiking, bike touring, mountain biking, road cycling, gravel cycling).

Goals

Our goal is to improve the data on OpenStreetMap for it to be in line with the information that is provided on-site and to improve our user’s experiences. We focus mainly on access restrictions with regards to private land or bike restrictions. In all cases, we try to follow the OSM editing rules.

Hashtag

We include the hashtag #komoot in the changelog of the edits.

Data Sources

We offer public administrations, nature parks, and private landowners the possibility to contact us if one of our route suggestions crosses an access restricted area. Since in most cases it is not possible for us to check the situation on-site, we ask for a series of proof before we change the data on OSM. We require the following data before we make edits:

  • Personal information
  • Reason for their claim
  • Information about the exact path that needs to be changed (start- and endpoint)
  • The description of why the path is allegedly in violation of the law
  • Information about the legal basis or law that refers to this violation
  • Additional files that support their claim (i.e. photos from the situation on-site, official map data from the corresponding community office)

Editor training

Edits are only handled by people who get trained in OSM rules and guidelines, and following thorough research about the tags and their usage.
