Generalization
We have quite a few OSM compatible projects with icons. Carto is likely the most seen, but theres also Pinhead, Temaki, Maki, NPMap, and more. Would a more generic "iconography" property be more appropriate with a qualifier for each set? That way something like this chart can be programmatically supported by data item consumers, for instance stating preference and fallbacks. Welcome to thoughts! --GA Kevin (talk) 15:08, 8 July 2026 (UTC)
- Pinging @Minh Nguyen and @Chris2map as we've discussed data items before :) --GA Kevin (talk) 15:09, 8 July 2026 (UTC)
- My first thought is that there are two (different) topics, what informations we store in data items, and what we display on tag description pages. The things displayed (in the description box) on a tag page should be "standardized" and refer mostly to the "main" website, in my opinion. The use of the data items might be further expanded. This likely raises questions such as how it can be maintained. --Chris2map (talk) 18:53, 8 July 2026 (UTC)
- That's valid for the info box. Perhaps like Wikidata does we can use "applies to part" qualifier with Carto, Temaki, Pinhead, etc. all having their own item. Then we could setup the info box to use the part of Carto. Alternatively we can go the preference ranking route, with a reason of preferred ranking. Alternatively, info boxes can also be generalized to "icons" and show the sample with a caption of which set they are from. We don't really have a "main" style after all, Carto is default on osm.org as a style but there are others on that site and OSM as we all know is a database not style. Some food for thought, Im happy to work on the initialization and maintenance of whatever we decide is best.

- Edit to add: This also seems similar to (DEPRECATED) rendering image (P38) which is deprecated in favor of Carto-only, which could be revived. -- GA Kevin (talk) 15:19, 9 July 2026 (UTC)
