Proposal
I am proposing to add a new key value to Key:golf to be used when mapping golf courses. The fringe is the grass which sorrounds the green. See definition on glossary of golf - Wikipedia - Fringe with further sources. Currently there is no way of marking this common grass length in OSM.
Rationale
When looking at the proposal Proposal:Golf:first cut I took a closer look at the statement "often it acts a ring around the fairway and green." This higher grass can save the ball from rolling back down from the green if it is raised. I found sources on how the grass is defined in golf. I found that the ring around the green is often called fringe so I updated the glossary of golf - Wikipedia with sources.
I am thinking of the significance for data consumers could be to produce maps of holes to print to for example, signage or to use OSM digitaly in your phone instead of a custom static course guides.
The only obstacle I see in generating those maps to be used on actually signage is to properly define the
- golf=first_cut
- golf=fringe
- golf=out_of_bounds which is in used today (tagInfo)
- golf=distance_marker which is in used today (tagInfo)
Tagging
My proposal is to tag the golf=fringe on an areas which sorrounds a green tagged golf=green.

Darek Okrasa have a website in which he describes the terminology of the different parts of grass around the green. External Link with pictures. There is many terms such as:
- Apron
- Collar
- Fringe.
The fringe is a term which includes the Collar and Apron. The Collar is the area between the green and the rough while the Apron is the grass around inbetween the green and fairway.
Studying the sources linked in the Wikipedia discussion which I provided and reading on the internet, speaking with my local greenkeeper and people at the club it seems like the most common term is fringe as a term which describes both the collar and apron. I suggest we make it into a fringe because micromanaging to keep track of these two indivdual areas seems to complicated when in reality it describes the same height of grass but the placement of it is what decides on what it is.
