If you set out to map a place systematically (as I did with Chapel-en-le-Frith and Fulbourn recently), you end up with roads on the edges which are terminal (dead ends where a residential close backs onto open country), and others which go off into the countryside. It would be helpful to mark the latter so you can tell the difference on a map, see what still needs to be done, and point out on a map where the road might lead to. I suggest an arrowhead in the direction of the way connected to the node with 'to <wherever>' alongside.

I think this would be a useful annotation even when the way is eventually extended into the countryside rather than being incomplete, but often it will be many years before the smaller lanes do get added.

It's also useful where you have a stub of a side road but haven't followed it, even where it isn't on the local edge of the mapped world.

Discussion

This is commonly talked about and there definatly needs to be something. There is also this [[1]] and this [[2]]. I think the inportant thing is that its more than a tag, because the value of this feature is at its most when people edit, or make references to some data before travelling. I recon if 1 of all these proposals can be sorted the others can be scrapped at the same time. If it is posible to have the black arrow visible in editors as well as when rendered then this would be a suitable idea I think. Ben. 03:23 3rd February 2007 (UTC)

  • I think this complements other proposals: it isn't just intended to indicate there is more to do (i.e. that a road doesn't just end at a dead end), but also to show neighbouring places on the edges of urban areas.

Does this also help us in giving directions? "go through village1, and follow signs towards village2" Ojw 19:31, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

I've been tagging such end nodes merely with fixme=stub. But I agree that adding this extra information might be useful on occasion. Robx 10:13, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
