Water Rescue vs Lifeboat station vs Marine Rescue

Proposal originally started as Marine Rescue, which was amended to Lifeboat station as some people were concerned that it precluded rescues carried out in inland rivers & lakes. That then attracted criticism that a more generic term would be better --Fizzie41 (talk) 04:00, 6 January 2023 (UTC)

Air rescue

This tag makes no reference to the possible use of helicopters for search and rescue purposes. That will need to be discussed as it's own separate proposal --Fizzie41 (talk) 04:05, 6 January 2023 (UTC)

Amenity=lifeboat

While working on the proposal/s, I discovered the existence of amenity=lifeboat, which is being used to map the actual mooring location of rescue vessels at their base, despite them being mobile objects, which cannot be guaranteed to be at a certain location at any time.

This tag will also need to be discussed separately at another time, not as part of this proposal --Fizzie41 (talk) 04:05, 6 January 2023 (UTC)

E.g. water_rescue=lifeboat_mooring, that solves the mobility issue of the boat if the mooring point is reserved for this boat. --Polarbear w (talk) 11:16, 7 January 2023 (UTC)

Yes, it would, but, looking at random images, they show that sometimes the boat is moored on this side of the jetty & sometimes on that side; usually Boat 1 is moored here, but sometimes it's Boat 2, with Boat 1 not visible & various similar problems with saying "this boat is always moored here". --Fizzie41 (talk) 21:14, 7 January 2023 (UTC)

"Seamark" tags

A few people discussed dropping the various Seamark tags as "unnecessary", but were unable to give any further justification or reasoning for doing so. As mentioned at the time: "The tags defined on this page will render in various nautical charts" (https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Seamarks/Radio_Stations) so I don't understand why we wouldn't use them? --Fizzie41 (talk) 04:08, 6 January 2023 (UTC)

Reason for dropping "seamark" from proposal is keeping proposal simple as possible. Something B (talk) 08:43, 6 January 2023 (UTC)

They are only optional items to add if somebody (who, granted, possibly isn't just a normal day-to-day mapper) wishes to include them, which could include useful information on the map. --Fizzie41 (talk) 05:07, 7 January 2023 (UTC) (Oh, & thanks for fixing the typo!)

Subtagging specific types

Thanks for the new proposal. As we keep emergency=water_rescue more general, it would allow to create a subtagging scheme for further details of the feature, i.e.

water_rescue=*
water_rescue=marine_rescue
water_rescue=lifeboat_station
and further values, for stations on the edge of a lake, or more central in a city with many rivers.

Yes, that could be an option, although that could also be covered by the lifeboat=offshore / inshore / both option --Fizzie41 (talk) 21:19, 7 January 2023 (UTC)

For voting, it might be better to include only the key water_rescue=* to avoid heterogeneous opinions about the values.--Polarbear w (talk) 11:14, 7 January 2023 (UTC)

Yes, it probably would! But then once it went through & you started to expand it, you'd have people complaining that "this" was never discussed :-( --Fizzie41 (talk) 21:19, 7 January 2023 (UTC)
