Proposal talk:Hitchhiking

"hitchhiking places"? I would've thought that many roads, roads with certain properties, all qualify as good places to do hitchhiking. They should be reasonably busy, not high-speed motorways, and have a somewhere where a car can easily pull over. Might be better to tag these properties rather than trying to mention hitch-hiking particularly. When plotting a hitch-hiking map, you could assume for example that anywhere along a 'secondary' road is probably reasonably good for it, and then exclude sections which are tagged with "no stopping" restrictions -- Harry Wood 17:42, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

If this marks good (instead of just legal) hitch-hiking spots, I could see this being a useful feature. I'm not sure whether it should be rendered by default, as it's not a real physical feature as I understand it, but it can certainly go into the database. Maybe highway=hitchhiking_spot, or possibly hitchhiking=yes (both for nodes)? But anyway, just go ahead and tag these places, and create a dedicated hitchhiking map. There is allready some kind of a hitchhiking map, called (Hint: liftershalte only redirects to --Look4book (talk) 07:20, 11 December 2019 (UTC)) It uses it's own database for hitchhiking-spots, and was initially based on google.maps. Meanwhile, OSM is used as a additional possible layer to promote the idea of an open map to other users. Currently, there are ~1600 spots, mainly in Germany, The Netherlands and Europe in general. • Wow, im glad to see the need for that. Yes, it is legal in most places, and yes, many people still do that. However, OSM wouldn't be the first map with hitchhiking places. I already started one 1,5 years ago, which is running now at . It was based on google maps, and a few weeks ago I added an OSM-Layer. There are now more than 1600 entries all over the world. I'll be glad to add all these places to openstreetmap as well. I think it could be useful to not only add the places, but also the rating (people can rate the spots on my map). However, these ratings are usual only personal opinions. --MrTweek 12:30, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
  • Yeah, I'll propose to start OSM on other planets to make it the "Hitchhiker's guide through the galaxy", and don't panic. --Lulu-Ann 23:12, 16 May 2009 (UTC)
