Avalanche protection?

The page Key:covered says to use tunnel=avalanche_protector for avalanche protection tunnels/covers which are open on one side. How is this different than a protection gallery? --Jeisenbe (talk) 05:13, 29 February 2020 (UTC)

See https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/tags/tunnel=avalanche_protector - used >1800 times, documented in Key:tunnel but not on a separate tag page. --Jeisenbe (talk) 05:20, 29 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi and thanks for the hint! I wasn't aware of tunnel=avalanche_protector. Unfortunately, there are two problems with this tag:
  1. We normally use covered=* instead of tunnel=* for objects that are open on at least one side.
  2. The key name, avalanche_protector, is a misnommer as it can also be used for galleries that protect against landslides according to the wiki.
I intentionally named the tag in such a way that it can be used for all kind of protection galleries. Many protection galleries in monaneous areas with snowfall in winter likely also protect agains landslides in the summer.
However, as tunnel=avalanche_protector seems to be an established tag, i'm unsure if the community would accept a change. --SelfishSeahorse (talk) 18:07, 1 March 2020 (UTC)
Good points. I think in common language an avalanche/landslide protection gallery might be referred to as a tunnel, but I can see the argument against this too. I didn't realize that the term "avalanche" is specific to snow and ice only, though I suppose we normally say "landslide" or "rockfall" in my area where there's no snow. I would probably recommend keeping the common tag and just adding clarification that it can also be used for rockfall and landslide protection galleries, since these appear to be constructed in an identical fashion --Jeisenbe (talk) 01:26, 2 March 2020 (UTC)

The value "gallery" may be ambiguous

A search of the internet for "covered gallery" or "gallery" + "covered" finds many pages about art galleries, and some about walkways covered by windows in cities (https://www.voyagesphotosmanu.com/covered-gallery.html) but not much about rockfall or snow avalanche protection. Perhaps covered=avalanche_gallery would be clearer? --Jeisenbe (talk) 05:18, 29 February 2020 (UTC)

You're right. I've changed it to the clearer tag covered=protection_gallery. --SelfishSeahorse (talk) 18:18, 1 March 2020 (UTC)
