Rendered as: Text annotation for bridge

Often the bridge itself has a name, which is different to the name of the road over the bridge.

e.g. here in Bedford, Prebend Street goes over County Bridge. But it's still Prebend Street as it does so.

Some footpath-over-railway bridges here are tagged also.

Sometimes the road gets tagged with the bridge name, which might be wrong (the road still keeps its name as it goes over the bridge)

Also, the bridge name might be visible in different ways (e.g. signs visible from water level might say the name of the bridge, but not bother telling you the name of the road on top of it)

Proposal: something like

bridge_name = something

on the bridge way

For rendering, we don't really want it along the road, because many bridges tend to be so short that the name is lost when doing it that way. Rendering might be similar to that of 'points of interest', localities, etc.

Special rendering of course for canal maps, railway maps, etc.

Don't forget to add a wikipedia= tag if it's something really notable!

Relations/Proposed/Bridges_and_Tunnels shows how can this be done using relations --Jttt 19:54, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

seems to be the better way to do that. --Bkr 21:47, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Should it be bridge:name instead of bridge_name? --Zverik 05:57, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

I agree with bridge:name. So that you can also have bridge:alt_name, bridge:old_name, bridge:official_name, and so on. --seav 18:05, 12 October 2010 (BST)

I marked the proposal as abandoned since bridge:name is more widespread now with ratio 3:1, documented on bridge=* and preferred option is name=* on man_made=bridge--Jojo4u (talk) 12:25, 4 September 2015 (UTC)
