Recently I became aware, through the ''[[w:Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2024-07-04/Obituary|Wikipedia Signpost]]'', of a former contributor to this wiki and OSM who has sadly passed away. Wikipedia has [[w:Wikipedia:Deceased Wikipedians/Guidelines|a well-documented procedure]] for respectfully responding to news of the deceased, including blocking their account (since they won’t be able to defend against identity theft), protecting their user page (since they won’t be able to respond to any defacement), turning off subscriptions (to avoid spamming their families with irrelevant notifications), and optionally posting an obituary. In some cases, those who had advanced permissions are blocked (since they won’t be able to defend against identity theft).
